Belden and Edge2Web Target the Data-to-Decision Gap in Manufacturing

A new joint solution combines edge connectivity with cloud analytics to turn plant floor data into actionable KPIs — without custom integration projects.

Belden Inc. has launched a new Smart Factory Insights solution developed with Edge2Web and built on AWS IoT SiteWise, aimed at a problem familiar to most industrial engineers: plants that generate enormous volumes of data but struggle to convert it into operational decisions.

The offering pairs Belden Horizon Data Operations, which connects and normalizes data from more than 300 industrial protocols and device types, with Edge2Web Factory Insights, a SaaS application that calculates standard performance metrics such as OEE, TEEP, MTBF/MTTR and energy consumption. The result is a no-code platform for building dashboards, scorecards and GenAI-generated alerts, scalable from a single line to multi-site global operations.

Why it matters for engineers and buyers

For plant engineers and procurement teams, the core issue the companies are addressing is integration overhead. Connecting legacy PLCs, SCADA systems and modern IIoT devices into a single analytics layer typically requires stitching together multiple vendors — middleware, historian, visualization and AI tooling — each with its own licensing, support and failure modes. A pre-integrated stack reduces that burden, but it also narrows the field: adopting this solution means committing to the AWS IoT SiteWise ecosystem and the Belden/Edge2Web architecture specifically.

That trade-off is worth scrutinizing during procurement. Buyers should ask how the solution handles protocol coverage for their specific legacy equipment, what happens to on-premises data sovereignty requirements, and how pricing scales as sites and tags multiply — a common cost trap with SaaS-based industrial analytics. The promise of faster time-to-value is real, but so is the long-term dependency on a specific cloud and vendor combination.

“Most manufacturers are not lacking data. They are missing the connection from data to decisions,” said David Ricks, Ecosystem Partner Program Manager at Belden.

For operations running mixed-vintage equipment — common across process industries, food & beverage and heavy manufacturing — the multi-protocol support is the more defensible selling point than the AI layer, which remains early-stage across the industry as a whole.

Nordic relevance

Nordic manufacturers, particularly in process industries, energy and marine-adjacent production, face similar pressure to demonstrate OEE and energy efficiency gains under tightening regulatory and sustainability reporting requirements. Cloud-based analytics platforms like this one raise familiar questions for Nordic buyers around data residency, connectivity reliability in remote or harsh sites, and compatibility with existing rugged edge infrastructure already deployed on the floor.

As with any cloud-dependent industrial solution, the practical performance will depend heavily on the quality of the edge hardware and connectivity feeding it — an area where rugged, field-proven equipment remains essential regardless of which analytics platform sits on top.
