Kontron Transportation Brings MCx Railway Communications to AKN Eisenbahn

A new mission-critical communication deployment in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein shows how regional rail operators can modernize radio systems without building new infrastructure.

Kontron Transportation has been awarded a contract by AKN Eisenbahn GmbH to deploy an MCx-based railway communication system across the operator's network in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. The regional rail operator, which runs more than 100 kilometers of track and carries millions of passengers annually, is replacing legacy communication systems while maintaining operational continuity and safety.

The core engineering decision here is notable: rather than building dedicated radio infrastructure, the MCx solution runs over existing public LTE and 5G networks using an over-the-top approach. For regional and secondary line operators — who typically operate with tighter capital budgets than national rail networks — this avoids the cost and lead time of deploying proprietary radio coverage, while still delivering mission-critical functions such as real-time voice communication and reliable emergency call handling.

Why it matters for procurement teams

Railway communication systems sit at the intersection of safety compliance and long-term technology risk. Operators need solutions that work today under current GSM-R-style requirements, but that won't become obsolete as Europe moves toward FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) standards. Kontron's MCx approach is built on international mission-critical standards and positioned as a bridge technology — delivering immediate functional benefits while allowing a gradual migration path toward FRMCS, rather than forcing a disruptive rip-and-replace cycle later.

Kontron Transportation states it has already equipped more than 1,500 railway kilometers across German regional infrastructure operators with this MCx approach, suggesting the AKN deployment follows an established, repeatable deployment model rather than a one-off pilot.

The solution enables mission-critical communications over public LTE and 5G mobile networks, creating the foundation for efficient modernization of railway radio on regional and secondary lines.

Nordic relevance

Nordic regional rail operators face similar structural pressures: aging GSM-R-era infrastructure, FRMCS transition timelines set by EU-Rail, and limited appetite for capital-intensive dedicated radio builds across sparsely populated routes in Norway, Sweden and Finland. An over-the-top, public-network-based mission-critical communication model is directly relevant to operators managing long branch lines or secondary infrastructure where dedicated coverage has historically been hard to justify economically.

For engineers and infrastructure planners evaluating communication upgrades, the AKN project offers a concrete reference point for how MCx deployments perform in live regional rail operations — and how a phased approach to FRMCS compliance can be structured without disrupting service.
