TEWS Technologies Launches First Dedicated VPX Carrier for VITA 93 QMC Modules

The SOSA-aligned TVPX210 gives defence and aerospace integrators a standardized way to mix and match commercial QMC I/O modules without redesigning VPX hardware.

TEWS Technologies has introduced the TVPX210, described as the industry's first dedicated VPX carrier built specifically for VITA 93 QMC modules. The 3U VPX board is SOSA aligned and gives defence and aerospace system designers a standardized way to combine commercial off-the-shelf QMC modules for analog and digital I/O, serial communication, networking, CAN and FPGA functions on a single, reusable carrier.

The card provides three single-width QMC sites, which can be populated flexibly: three single-width modules, a combination of a double-width and single-width module, or one triple-width module. A non-blocking PCI Express Gen3 switch distributes the host interface across all three sites, with each site getting PCIe Gen3 x4 connectivity so multiple high-bandwidth modules can run concurrently. I/O signals route to the VPX P1 and P2 rear connectors, avoiding front-panel cabling and simplifying backplane or transition-card integration.

Why it matters for procurement and design

For engineers specifying VPX systems, the practical benefit is architectural stability under changing mission requirements. Rather than redesigning a carrier board every time an I/O mix changes, teams can swap QMC modules on a common, qualified platform — reducing NRE, schedule risk and the burden of requalifying hardware for each program variant. This matters particularly in long-lifecycle defence and aerospace programs where I/O requirements evolve across platform variants or over decades of service.

The TVPX210 implements the SLT3-PAY-2U2U-14.2.17 SOSA payload slot profile and includes a VITA 46.11 compatible management controller for health monitoring, inventory management and communication with the VPX System Manager — features that matter for integrators building toward open-standard, interoperable system architectures rather than proprietary stacks. It is offered in a conduction-cooled configuration with VPX REDI implementation per ANSI/VITA 48.2, suited to rugged, thermally demanding platforms.

"As the industry's first dedicated VPX carrier for QMC modules, the TVPX210 is an important step in the adoption of VITA 93," said Tim Tews, General Manager at TEWS Technologies. "Customers can tailor the I/O set for a program and preserve the system architecture as requirements change."

For Nordic defence, maritime and critical infrastructure programs increasingly aligning with SOSA and open-VPX architectures, a standardized QMC carrier offers a lower-risk path to modular I/O without locking procurement into a single supplier's proprietary mezzanine format — a consideration relevant to Nordic naval, land systems and industrial automation buyers evaluating long-term platform flexibility.

By formalizing a dedicated integration path for VITA 93, TEWS is positioning QMC as a mainstream mezzanine standard for rugged VPX systems, giving designers more system-level choice as the ecosystem matures.
